Appendix 4.1 Emission Factors for Construction Dust Emission

Emission Factor Calculation for Unpaved Road

To estimate the emission factor for the construction dust emission due to the vehicles moving on the unpaved haul roads.

1.     Emission Factor (lb/VKT)

= k(s/12)a (W/3)b                                        x                      S

      (Mdry /0.2)c   15

(As given in Compilation of Air Pollutant Emission Factors, AP-42 (Section 13.2.2), 5th Edition, published by USEPA)

VKT – vehicle kilometers traveled

2.     Conversion of Emission Factor: E(g/VKT) = E(lb/VMT) / 281.9

3.     Emission rate (g/m2/s) = Emission Factor x Distance traveled per hour / unpaved area

Unpaved area

2688 m2

Assumed 7m wide haul road along the site boundary

Emission Factor Calculation for Bulk Materials Handling

To estimate the emission factor for the construction dust emission due to bulk materials handling during the excavation work.

1.     Emission Factor(kg/Mg) = k (0.0016) x (U/2.2)^1.3 / (M/2)^1.4

(As given in Compilation of Air Pollutant Emission Factors, AP-42 (Section 13.2.4), 5th Edition, published by USEPA)

2.     Amount of material to be removed per hour, R (kg/hr)

= Volume of soil x Density / Duration of excavation

3.     Emission Rate(g/m2/s)  = Emission Factor x R / Excavation Area

It is assumed that the excavation area to be the whole construction site area of the WFM.

Emission Factor for Stockpile Wind Erosion

The emission factor for the construction dust emission due to stockpile wind erosion is given in Compilation of Air Pollutant Emission Factors, AP-42 (Section 11.9.2), 5th Edition, published by USEPA as 0.85 Mg/hectare/yr (= 2.695 x 10-6) for TSP.
