North Lantau Expressway

The North Lantau Expressway is a 12.5 km long dual three-lane expressway with a driving speed limit of 100 km/h connecting the urban areas of west Kowloon to the new Chek Lap Kok Airport. The expressway takes the form of a linear structure along the northern coast of the Lantau Island building partially upon cutting slopes and partially on reclaimed land at the toe of hillsides. The construction involved extensive land excavation of 6.3M cu m soil and rock and the removal of 10M cu m dredged material from sea bed with the filling of 14 M cu m imported marine sand and 4M cu m seawall rock to form the roadwork. This is the first super highway on the island.

Tai Ho Wan, is an inlet of the seashore where the expressway makes it way through by forming an embankment between the headlands engulfing the bay. In order to assure the healthy growth of the mangrove and the maintenance of the wetland habitat, additional water quality stations were set up together with routine site inspections by resident environmental staff to prevent any disturbance due to the construction.
