  • Energy Resources Management was the first company in Hong Kong dedicated purely to to energy management and to addressing energy efficiency from a management perspective. The company’s milestones include conducting its first energy audit for a Hong Kong listed company in 1992, writing its first shared-savings performance contract in 1993, and developing a greenhouse gas emissions inventory protocol in 1994, before the terms ‘carbon audit’ or ‘carbon footprint’ had even been coined
  • Other milestones include:
    • Initiated inclusion of a free GHG report (carbon audit) with energy audits since 1995
    • A company officer was conferred with the first Certified Energy Manager accreditation in Asia in 1998
    • Commenced website publication of monthly degree day data from 1999
    • Reached the first one million USD savings threshold for a single building in 1999. The building reduced emissions of 75,000 tonnes of CO2e in the process
    • Adopted Australia Standard 3598:2000 for energy audits in 2000
    • Developed Energy Management Scorecard (EMScore©) in 2002
    • Completed installation of the first remote monitoring of real time electricity consumption for a client site in 2003
  • Each year Energy Resources Management studies dozens of new products and new techniques claiming to save energy and reduce carbon emissions. By determining where each will (and will not) deliver real energy cost improvements, this cumulative expertise allows clients to achieve world class energy efficiency and avoid failed investments, wasted time, and dead-end efforts

  • Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK) has a number of ongoing programmes and initiatives intended both to maximise energy and resource use efficiencies and minimise carbon emissions at HKIA. Carbon reduction initiatives include:
    • Continuous energy use minimisation efforts – AA achieved the Energywi$e excellence label in 2008 - the launch year of the Energywi$e programme;
    • Installation and lighting replacement using more efficient lighting systems (e.g. T5 and LED);
    • Improvements to seawater cooled chillers, including upgrading to variable frequency motors and the use of more efficient refrigerants;
    • Require newly registered vehicle operating in the airport restricted area to be fuel efficient and environmentally friendly (e.g. hybrid, electric or Euro IV);
    • Mandate that all vehicles in the airport restricted area must switch off idling engines (with certain exemptions for operational and safety reasons);
    • AAHK vehicle replacement programme underway to replace vehicles with fuel efficient, hybrid or electric vehicles in phases;
    • Encouraging increased use of HKIA’s fixed ground power and pre-conditioned air systems by aircraft at parking stands, removing the need for aircraft to engage their own power generation units during turnaround;
    • Increasing use of B5 bio-diesel (recycled from used cooking oil collected from restaurants at the airport) in AAHK’s diesel vehicles with plans to extend to broader use by diesel vehicles in the airport restricted area.

  • Identify viable options to "reduce, reuse and recycle" in its operations and has therefore gone beyond the statutory requirements with the implementation of a number of green initiatives, and has set the benchmark for the industry.
  • HIT is at the forefront of Hong Kong’s port industry when it comes to the implementation of a “Green HIT” to deploy eRTGC, which is part of a wider range of initiatives that has launched in recent years to help protect the environment. This HK$140 million crane-electrification programme will reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and cut substantial energy use at Kwai Tsing Container Port.
  • Launch hybrid RTGCs which combine battery power with ultra-low sulphur diesel (ULSD) engines to maintain operational flexibility. These cranes “recycle” energy when the main hoist is lowered and emit less smoke
  • As the first terminal operator in Hong Kong to use ULSD in place of Industrial Diesel Oil, which produces a much greater amount of pollutants. As a result, sulphur dioxide (SO2) emissions would further been reduced. This fuel conversion has been carried out in advance of government regulation
  • Install energy-saving, waste-reduction and pollution-reducting equipment in its administration buildings

  • Electronic message display in guestrooms for notification of maintenance and information issues in order to reduce paper consumption for guest letters
  • Application of digital thermostat control system in guestrooms for energy efficiency practice
  • Adoption of Green Purchasing Policy such as only purchase what is absolutely necessary, purchase goods in bulk package whenever applicable to minimize packaging waste, purchase recycled toner cartridges for laser printer and purchase photo-degradable plastic bags for sanitary bag, shirt bag, garment bag, garment cover, laundry bag, dim sum bag, shopping bag, etc.
  • Guests are encouraged to play their parts in the rooms with prominently displaced dual language tent cards to change bed linen on alternate days and provide any toiletries (razor, shaving cream, tooth paste, tooth brush, comb) upon request to save environment
  • Actively recycling of plastic bottles, newspaper and aluminum cans
  • Replaced 2 sets of VVVF (Variable Voltage Variable Frequency) control for 2 service lifts in year 2007 for energy efficiency
  • Installation of frequency inverter for large sea water cooling pumps for chiller plant and chilled water pump for energy efficiency
  • Replaced more energy efficient T5 for T8 fluorescent tubes
  • Completed in year 2007 for a new electric hybrid plant (consisting of electric steam boilers and water to water heat pumps for 95% efficiency & Coefficient of Performance 2.5 respectively) for the replacement of a diesel fuel boiler plant (50~60% overall efficiency mainly due to the energy wasted through 200 oC hot flue gas exhausted to open air). The major advantages are CO2 reduction (approx. 70 cars off the road every year) and energy saving of more than 10% with full recovery of cooling energy to trim down chiller plant load during generation of hot water by heat pumps
  • Replaced an approved type new dry cleaning machine in year 2008 in accordance with the Air Pollution Control (Dry-cleaning Machines)(Vapour Recovery) Regulation
  • Replacement of LED lights for halogen lights will be the next major energy efficient project to reduce greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions in the coming years

  • Have implemented further control of boiler operation time which saved about 6000 litres monthly
  • Have 180 nos. of 1200 mm length T8 fluorescent tubes which are operating 20 hours per day. We retrofit them to T5 fluorescent tube with “save it easy “ energy saving adaptor (28 W) and disable the electromagnetic ballasts which saved 22% of electricity compared with original lighting fitting (36 W)
  • Have installed 6 nos. of motion sensor to control all lighting ON/OFF automatically for 6 staff toilets which are operating 24 hours per day. It saved about 30% of electricity for lighting fittings compared with local switch control
  • Have used energy saving spot lights (9 W) for 6 nos. of new renovated staff toilets which are operating 24 hours per day. To select energy saving spot lights which have saved about 55% of electricity for lighting fittings compared with conventional spot lights (20 W)
  • Installed 120 nos. of planter lights at planter which are operating 7 hours per day. To select 120 nos. of 20 W energy saving lamps instead of conventional spot lights (80 W) at planter which saved up to 75% of electricity compared with traditional lighting fitting
  • Have de-lamped 132 nos. of lamps at all back of house areas which exceed the standard lighting levels which saved 114 kWh / day. The energy saving is around 33 % of the total consumption of existing installation
  • Have 200 nos. of 3 W tungsten festoon lights at Lobby Lounge which are operating 14 hours per day. To retrofit 200 nos. of tungsten lights with 0.25W LED lights which have saved 92% of electricity compared with original lighting fitting
