Electricity Generation by Fossil Fuels

Burning of fossil fuel to generate electricity is Hong Kong’s major contributor of greenhouse gases, accounting for some 62% of total emissions in Hong Kong.

Since 1997, the Government banned the construction of new coal-fired generating units in favour of natural gas, which emits around 50% less greenhouse gas for the same amount of electricity produced.

Power Generation by Natural Gas
Power companies are also encouraged to take measures to maximize the use of natural gas in electricity generation.  In the new Scheme of Control Agreements (SCAs) signed with the two power companies in January 2008, the Government have put in place provisions to encourage the power companies to implement more environmentally friendly measures, which in turn should contribute positively towards the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.
