Generation by Renewable Energy

Renewable energy (RE) utilizes natural resources such as sunlight and wind which are naturally replenished.  This offers alternatives to the burning of fossil fuels in electricity generation.

In the First Sustainable Development Strategy for Hong Kong promulgated in May 2005, the Government, after considering the local social, economic and environmental conditions, and having regard to the outcome of the public engagement process undertaken by the Council for Sustainable Development, has set a target of having 1-2% of Hong Kong’s total electricity supply met by renewable by 2012.

The two power companies have committed to setting up pilot commercial-scale wind turbines. Hongkong Electric Company's wind turbine commenced operation in February 2006 and CLP Power (CLP) is now in progress for the construction of a wind turbine at Hei Ling Chau.

Under the new Scheme of Control Agreements (SCAs) signed in January 2008, the power companies will enjoy a higher rate of return for their investment in RE facilities.  They will also be offered a bonus in permitted return depending on the extent of RE usage in their electricity generation.
