Landfills

Decomposition of organic carbon at landfills will generate methane, another major greenhouse gas. Capturing and utilizing the landfill gases help prevent methane from migrating into the atmosphere and contributing to global climate change while reduce odors and other hazards.
 

All operating landfills in Hong Kong are utilizing landfill gas to produce energy for on-site equipment. The remaining landfill gas is flared for safety reason and to prevent its emission to the atmosphere. Landfill gas extracted from the closed Shuen Wan Landfill and the North East New Territories (NENT) Landfill is also transferred to the Towngas plant in Tai Po as fuel for town gas production.
