1. Introduction

It is very common to present traffic noise prediction result in two dimensional styles, for example, in table form or on plan. However, as a result of information technology evolution, three dimensional (3D) visualisation technology helps to effectively present the predicted noise environment in assisting knowledge transfer and promulgation to general public and other stakeholders.

A Traffic Noise Modelling Standard Data Exchange (TNMSDX) protocol was developed and formulated to provide guidelines for the preparation of traffic noise model input data in a standard ASCII format. For a step further, a conversion program (TNMSDX23D) was developed to convert the input data and noise prediction result to 3D visualisation in virtual reality modelling language format (VRML). This assists to present useful geographical and noise data in an informative manner, which can be easily transmitted via the Internet, having the following purposes:

(i) Improving overall appreciation of noise environment for the public or other stakeholders to understand proposed projects in 3D views via the Internet;

(ii) Allowing readers to easily surf around the 3D environment and grasp noise information using common Internet browsers with VRML plug-in;

(iii) Facilitating checking and vetting of road traffic noise model input from various computation software.

Professionals and consultants may freely download the conversion program for use. Source code is also avaliable subject to open source license requirement. Please contact Assessment and Noise Group.
