Glass Container Recycling Programme

Background

Glass is an inert material and will not release harmful material to the environment on disposal.  However, disposal of glass waste at landfills will consume our dwindling landfill space and is a waste of valuable natural resource.  In view of this, the Environmental Protection Department has been exploring practicable means to recover used glass containers for recycling in partnership with different sectors.

Glass Container Recycling Programme for the Hotel Sector

With the support of the EPD and the Hong Kong Hotels Association and the participation of 11 hotels, the Glass Container Recycling Programme for the Hotel Sector was first launched in November 2008 to help the trade to reduce waste disposal and ensure that the glass containers generated are managed in an environmentally friendly way. The programme was jointly organized and funded by the participating hotels. This year, the hotels joining the programme have increased to 14. The programme targets on beverage glass containers which are large in quantity and easier to handle.  The hotels participating in this programme will separate the glass containers from the waste stream and store them in collection bins.  The collection contractor will regularly deliver the glass containers to the designated recycling facility for processing.  The recycling contractor will crush the glass containers into glass sand, which will replace natural river sand as an engineering material for the production of paving blocks.     Participating Hotels: - Eaton Hotel Hong Kong - Four Seasons Hotel Hong Kong - Grand Hyatt Hong Kong - Holiday Inn Golden Mile Hong Kong (new) - Hyatt Regency Hong Kong, Tsim Sha Tsui (new) - InterContinental Hong Kong - The Langham Hotel, Hong Kong (new) - Langham Place, Mongkok, Hong Kong - Mandarin Oriental Hong Kong - Novotel Century Hong Kong (new) - JW Marriott Hotel Hong Kong - The Peninsula Hong Kong - Renaissance Harbour View Hotel Hong Kong - The Swire Hotels - The Upper House (new)
