Glass Container Recycling Programme for the Hotel Sector

Glass Container Recycling Programme

Background

Poster

About 100,000 tonnes of glass containers are disposed of in our landfills every year. Glass is a kind of inert material and will not release harmful material to the environment on disposal. However, as glass can hardly decompose, disposal of glass containers by landfilling will exhaust our dwindling landfill space and is also a waste of valuable natural resource. In view of this, the Environmental Protection Department (EPD) has been exploring practicable means to recover used glass containers for recycling in partnership with different sectors.

Glass Container Recycling Programme for the Hotel Sector

With the support of the EPD and the Hong Kong Hotels Association, the Glass Container Recycling Programme (GCRP) for the Hotel Sector was first launched in November 2008 to help hotels to reduce waste disposal and ensure that the glass containers generated are managed in an environmentally friendly way. The programme is funded by the participating hotels. Currently, there are 48 hotels joining the programme.
The programme targets mainly on beverage glass containers which exist in large quantity and are easier to handle. The participating hotels would separate the used glass containers from the waste stream and store the containers in collection bins. An appointed collection contractor would collect and deliver the glass containers to proper recycling facilities for processing. The waste glass containers collected would be turned into glass sand, which substitutes natural river sand as an engineering material for the production of paving blocks. Such eco-paving blocks have been used in various public works projects of the Highways Department, Civil Engineering and Development Department, Architectural Services Department, the Hong Kong Housing Authority, the EPD etc.

With effect from February 2013, those hotels which have set up their own arrangement to collect glass bottles for recycling may also join the programme as nominal participants. Interested hotels may submit their applications with relevant supporting documents to the EPD.
