INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background
To cope
with the rapid development of Hong Kong and the great demand
for land for various purposes, sites which may have been contaminated
due to their former usage are also considered for redevelopment.
In order to avoid or minimize any risks or hazards associated
with these sites, the project proponent should carry out a
site contamination assessment and implement remediation measures
to clean up the land if necessary prior to any redevelopment
works.
Sites
previously used for petrol filling stations, boatyards and
vehicle repair/dismantling workshops could be contaminated
as a result of the operations carried out on the sites. This
set of guidelines is prepared specifically for the contaminated
land assessment and remediation for these industries. For
more general requirements, the reader may also refer to the
relevant Practice Note for Professional Persons on contaminated
land management issued by the Environmental Protection Department
(EPD).
