Regional Cooperation

EPD has been working to collate the effort of the Hong Kong's waste trade partners in the Asia Pacific region to combat against illegal shipments of hazardous waste. As part of our effort working towards this goal, EPD actively participated in organizing the first "Regional Training Seminar for Port Enforcement Officer" under the initiative of the Secretariat of the Basel Convention to share the Hong Kong's work and experience in control and prevention of illegal shipments of hazardous waste.

The seminar was held on 4 - 8 December 2000 in Hong Kong. Around 40 delegates from 12 Asian countries participated in the Seminar. In the four and a half days training seminar, EPD gave a number of presentations on strategic planning and practical enforcement experience on control and prevention of illegal waste shipments. The "partnership" enforcement strategy adopted by Hong Kong was well received. EPD has taken the valuable opportunity to establish links and strengthen the cooperation with the control counterparts in the Asia Pacific region.
