Marine Sediment Quality

To monitor the quality of marine sediments, the Environmental Protection Department (EPD) collects sediment samples from 45 open water stations and tests for over 60 physical and chemical parameters. The mean concentrations of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in marine sediments in 2003-2007 are illustrated in the figure below. The levels of other trace organics such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) as well as heavy metals are available in the annual report Marine Water Quality in Hong Kong.
