9. Will the list of POPs under the Stockholm Convention expand in the future?

The Stockholm Convention contains provisions for expanding control to other chemicals that meet the POPs criteria - organic, persistent in the environment, transportable, bio-accumulative and highly toxic. The existing list of the "dirty dozen" may be expanded to include other chemicals in the future. The Persistent Organic Pollutants Review Committee (POPRC) is responsible for advising the Conference of Parties on what chemicals should be included in the list. The Fourth Conference of the Parties to the Stockholm Convention, held in May 2009, decided to add 9 new chemicals to the Convention, including 5 industrial chemicals and 4 pesticides.
