Persistent Organic Pollutants

FAQs

9. Will the list of POPs under the Stockholm Convention expand in the future?

The Stockholm Convention (the Convention) contains provisions for expanding control to other chemicals that meet the POPs criteria - organic, persistent in the environment, transportable, bio-accumulative and highly toxic. The list of the "dirty dozen" has been expanded to include other chemicals in the future. The Persistent Organic Pollutants Review Committee (POPRC) is responsible for advising the Conference of Parties on what chemicals should be included in the list. As of the ninth Conferences of the Parties, 18 new chemicals, including industrial chemicals and pesticides, were added to the Annexes of the Convention.
