Influence of Livestock Farms (Pig and Poultry) on Watercourses - North District

North District (Map)

Most livestock farms in the North District are located in the catchments of two major watercourses, River Ganges and River Beas.

River Ganges

Measuring 31 km in length and covering an area of 18 km2, the River Ganges joins ShenzhenRiver before discharging into DeepBay. The closure of a large number of livestock farms under the Voluntary Surrender Schemes of poultry and pig farms induced reduction of pollution loading and the water quality is tending recovery. However, discharge from the remaining livestock farms still causes pollution to the catchment area of the river.

River Beas

Running down from Pat Heung of Yuen Long District and across the Hang Tau Tai Po area of North District, River Beas is a tributary of River Indus. Many of its catchments areas are unsewered. Its water quality is affected by discharge from the remaining livestock farms and unsewered villages in its catchments area.
