Yuen Long East District

Ngau Tam Mei Main Drainage

The Ngau Tam Mei Main Drainage Channel was one of the river training project for alleviating the problem of severe flooding in the lower and middle parts of the Yuen Long, Kam Tin and Ngau Tam Mei Basins. The upstream portion of the project (phase II) was completed in 2003 while the downstream portion (phase I) was completed in 2005. Running from east to west, the Channel covers a catchment area of about 10 km2 with an inflatable dam at the downstream end of drainage channel that prevents tidal water intruding into the channel. The suspected major water pollution sources within the catchment are discharges from the livestock farms and rural unsewered villages draining into the channel.

The 2 pig farms and 1 chicken farm in the catchment area rear about 7,000 pigs and 60,000 chickens. Discharges from the treatment facilities of large scale residential developments at the northwest side of the catchment (Fairview Park, Palm Springs, Royal Palms, etc) would not enter the Ngau Tam Mei Main Drainage Channel.

Since 2001, there were 3 convictions against the farms in this river section under the Waste Disposal Ordinance and the Waste Disposal (Livestock Waste) Regulations. In the Year 2006, 2 public complaints were received and 21 inspections were conducted to these farms.
