Surface
Grinding at Chung On Estate, Ma On Shan, N.T.
The
project involved the use of a disc grinder to smoothen the
external wall of the superstructure at Ching On Estate.
Environmental Concern
Without
proper dust control measures, large amount of dust would be
released during surface grinding and would impair the general
air quality in the vicinity. In order to reduce the dust,
the gondola was covered with canvas on three sides and water
spray was used during grinding. However these measures were
not very effective resulting in dust still emitting in significant
quantity.

Measures
Adopted
Vacuuming
- The concrete surface grinding process was improved by using
a new concrete planer equipped with local dust extraction
filter.

Observations
& Achievements
The
use of local dust extraction filter was proved to be effective.
No dust emission from grinding was detected after the dust
extraction system was installed. The general air quality in
the surrounding area was much improved. Furthermore, the workers
worked in a much better environment.
