Achievements in environmental pollution control on construction activities

West Portal of Black Hill Tunnels, MTR Tseung Kwan O Extension

The construction of Black Hill tunnels was part of the MTR Tseung Kwan O Extension. The west portal of the tunnels was situated at Yau Tong Area.

Environmental Concern

The works were about 30 m away from the Yau Tong Centre residential building. Construction noise caused by the use of powered machinery for pouring concrete was the major concern of the residents.

Measures Adopted

Shielding - A massive acoustic shield was erected to screen the lower platform of the portal from the noise sensitive receivers. Noise barriers comprising of 3 to 4-storey of containers and sound absorptive panels were in place to screen the access road of the upper platform of the portal from the nearby noise sensitive receivers.

Administration - The site entrance was relocated to an area where it was screened from the noise sensitive receivers with assistance of purpose-built noise barriers.

Monitoring - An environmental team was set up to ensure the effectiveness of the mitigation measures

Observations & Achievements

The site was very close to dwellings. Erecting the acoustic shield and barriers had resulted in much reduction of noise impact to the dwellings. Additional administrative noise control measures were also conducted to further reduce the construction noise impact. The noise nuisance was minimized through these actions.
