Achievements in environmental pollution control on construction activities

Decommissioning Work at the North Apron of Kai Tak Airport

The project involved decommissioning of the North Apron of the former Kai Tak Airport.

Environmental Concern

As the decommissioning works had to be conducted round-the-clock, noise arising from the powered mechanical equipment, i.e. the generators & blowers were the main concern.

Measures Adopted

Noise Cover - To minimise noise impact, extensive noise mitigating measures such as acoustic enclosure, silencers and barriers were employed.

Administration - To further reduce the noise impact, fewer blowers were operated during the night-time.

Monitoring - To ensure that all the measures worked effectively to reduce the noise, additional monitoring of the works were conducted to keep the site under close surveillance.

Observations & Achievements

Without any noise abatement measures in place, the noise at the nearest noise sensitive receives would be 54 dB(A), which exceeded the relevant night-time noise limit of 50 dB(A). Together with the low-frequency tonal noise from the powered mechanical equipment perceived on-site, the noise would cause disturbance to the nearby residents during the night-time. Through adopting the mitigating measures, the residents in Ma Tau Kok were protected. No noise complaint was received since the noise mitigating measures were put in place.
