Project Details:
A building project included the expansion of the Birkenhead Point shopping centre and the building of five residential towers containing 252 units.
Waste Minimisation Measures Highlights:
Planning for waste reduction
- Set up waste team and action plans to manage and reduce waste and to review on waste reduction programme
- Include waste programme as part of their contract conditions
- Establish financial penalty system for any waste mishandling in sub-contractors
- Hire off-site consultants to monitor waste reduction programme
Waste management
- Allocate area and provide separate skips for on-site waste sorting
- Return packaging, off-cuts, waste, pallets, reels and drums to suppliers for reuse
- Recycle items such as plasterboard, steel, concrete, cardboard and timber
- Nominate responsible personnel to ensure the correct use of recycling skips
- Record waste type and volume for review of waste reduction programme
Education and training
- Organize induction programme to waste reduction for new sub-contractors
- Provide easy-to-read symbols and signs next to skips for workers to follow
Outcomes:
- 77% of materials recycled
- Reduced amount of materials sent to landfill
- Builders reduced their costs and subcontractors saved on packaging and recovered materials
- Demonstrated environmental responsibility thereby further developing community goodwill
