To address the indiscriminate use of plastic shopping bags, the environmental levy scheme on plastic shopping bags will commence on 7 July 2009. Chain or large supermarkets, convenience stores, and personal health and beauty product stores would be required to charge 50 cents for each plastic shopping bag provided to customers. Customers should bring their own shopping bags at all time to avoid the levy. For details of the environmental levy scheme, please click here.

The report summarises the state of Hong Kong's beach water in 2008. The percentage of Hong Kong's beaches complying with the Water Quality Objective remained at 83% in 2008, the same as in the previous five years (2003 to 2007), representing a significant improvement from 63% compliance recorded in 1997. In order to further improve beach water quality in Hong Kong, we need continued support from the community on Government's pollution abatement measures. More details can be found in the report.
