In the Policy Address this year, the Chief Executive has announced that the Government will continue a series of environmental initiatives, including measures to promote low carbon economy, improve air quality and properly process solid waste towards the vision for a greener Hong Kong. On conservation front, he has announced that the Ministry of Land and Resources has given approval for our geopark to be listed as a national geopark. To address the indiscriminate use of plastic shopping bags, the environmental levy scheme on plastic shopping bags has commenced since 7 July 2009. Chain or large supermarkets, convenience stores, and personal health and beauty product stores would be required to charge 50 cents for each plastic shopping bag provided to customers.
