RESTORATION AND AFTERUSE OF CLOSED LANDFILLS

There are 13 closed landfills in Hong Kong and a restoration programme implemented by EPD to reduce the potential safety and health risks of the closed landfills has been launched. The restored landfills are landscaped to provide a green zone to the urban areas, for people to enjoy a healthy living environment. It is intended that these restored landfills are to be developed into recreational facilities like golf courses, multi-purpose grass pitches, parks, etc.

Utilization of the landfill gas as non-fossil fuel is an environmental friendly way to deal with landfill gas and at the same time reduce HK's energy need. Greenhouse gases emitted from closed landfills are substantially reduced by flaring or utilization of the extracted landfill gas.
