WASTE ARISINGS

This section identifies the potential wastes arising from the construction, operation, restoration and aftercare of the Extension and assesses the potential environmental impacts associated with the handling and disposal of waste in accordance with the criteria in Annex 7 and 15 of the Environmental Impact Assessment Ordinance – Technical Memorandum (EIAO – TM).

Construction Phase

The main activities during the construction phase that will potentially result in waste generation include site clearance, site formation, demolition of infrastructure at the exiting SENT Landfill and construction of new infrastructure.  The type of waste generated includes:

Excavated material (about 1.1 Mm3 of excavated material will be generated, about 573,000 m3 will be stockpiled and reused on site while about 517,000 m3 will be disposed of off-site)
Construction waste (about 2,800 inert construction waste will be reused on site; about 1,500 tonnes of site clearance waste and 700m3 of non-inert construction waste will be disposed at the SENT landfill)
Chemical waste (less than a hundred litres per month will be disposed of at the Chemical Waste Treatment Facility)
Sewage (about 26 m3d-1 will be disposed of off-site)
General refuse (about 110 kg d-1 will be disposed of at SENT Landfill)

Operational/Restoration Phase

Landfill operation and restoration are not considered as waste generating activities. Waste generated during these phases are mainly confined to:

Sludge from the Leachate Treatment Plant (LTP) (about 5 m3d-1 to be disposed of at the tipping face)
Chemical Waste (less than a hundred litre per month to be disposed of at the Chemical Waste Treatment Facility)
Sewage (about 23 m3d-1 will be disposed of at the LTP or to the foul sewer)
General Refuse (about 98 kg d-1 will be disposed of at the tipping face)

Aftercare Phase

A small quantity of waste will be generated during the aftercare phase from the operation of the landfill gas and leachate management facilities and some minor maintenance works, these wastes include:

Sludge from the LTP (about 0.3 m3d-1 to be disposed of at other waste disposal facility)
Sewage (about 3 m3d-1 will be disposed of at the LTP or to the foul sewer)
General refuse (about 13 kg d-1 will be disposed of at other waste disposal facility)
