In the summer of 2015, the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department (FEHD) and Marine Department (MD) joined force to carry out a cleanup operation at Lap Sap Wan. The pebble beach, which was once been covered with a sea of marine refuse, restored its cleanliness. Press here for details of the said cleanup operation.
This summer, the FEHD continued to engage a service contractor to clean up Lap Sap Wan from 7 June to 24 July. After a period of 6 weeks, about 29 tonnes of refuse and some timber were collected. Similar to last year’s arrangement, the refuse was shipped to Ap Lei Chau Refuse Collection Point and then transferred to landfill for disposal.
The annual cleanup will help prevent accumulation of refuse at the beach but it would be more effective to prevent marine refuse from entering marine environment by reducing waste generation at source and keeping our shorelines clean. Everyone in the community could help protect our shorelines by practising the good habit of “Take your litter home” during outdoor activities, reducing the consumption of single-use items and disposing of litter properly before leaving coastal area.
