Microbeads are solid plastic particles with a size of less than 5mm; they are often intentionally added in rinse-off personal care and cosmetic products for providing functions such as scrubbing, exfoliating or cleansing.

Although the majority of microbeads will be removed by our sewage systems, the remaining microbeads will be discharged into the marine environment. They are regarded as the only source of ocean microplastics that are “intentionally added”.
