Environment and Ecology Bureau (Environment Branch)/ Environmental Protection Department – Job Shadowing Programme 2026

INTRODUCTION
The Job Shadowing Programme (“the Programme”) is organised by the Environmental Protection Department (EPD). It aims to provide opportunities for local secondary school students to learn about and deepen their understanding of the Environment and Ecology (Environment Branch) (EEB(EB)) and EPD’s work, so as to cultivate their passion for environment protection, broaden their horizons and prepare them for further studies and future career development in the environmental discipline. The Programme opens the door to a variety of growing environmental sectors and industries in Hong Kong for students to plan for their future career development.

OBJECTIVES

  • To provide students an opportunity to learn more about the careers in the environmental discipline,
  • To enhance the personal development of students through interactions with their shadowing mentors and the public, and
  • To deepen students’ understanding of environmental protection and the work of the EEB(EB)/EPD.

ELIGIBILITY
Local secondary school students (Form 4 to Form 6) with interest and passion in environmental protection are eligible to apply, and interested students must obtain recommendation from their headmaster/deputy headmaster. Each school can nominate up to 4 students to apply in the same year.

OUR SHADOWING MENTORS
Shadowing mentors are professional and technical staff working currently in the EEB(EB) and EPD with experience and expertise in various environmental fields, such as environmental planning and assessment, enforcement, environmental monitoring, facility operation, air/noise/waste/water policy, waste recycling, climate change, etc.

TIMING & ACTIVITIES
The Programme is a 3-day on-the-job experience, working with EEB(EB)/EPD’s staff through job shadowing. If the student is accepted to the programme, EEB(EB)/EPD staff will schedule the 3-day attachment with the student during the period of June to December 2026. Guided by experienced EEB(EB)/EPD’s staff, the students will visit the various environmental facilities, e.g. T⋅PARK, WEEE⋅PARK, O⋅PARK1, GREEN@COMMUNITY, etc. operated by the EPD, and/or experience the day-to-day operations and working environment in different offices of the EEB(EB)/EPD.
