Relative Significance

Between 2001 and 2018, SO2 emissions decreased by 80%, which were mainly caused by the decline in emissions from the public electricity generation and navigation sectors. Navigation and public electricity generation sectors were the top two sources of SO2 emissions, accounting for 49% and 47% of total SO2 emissions in 2018, respectively.

During the same period, SO2 concentration levels measured at the EPD’s general air quality monitoring stations by and large followed the SO2 emission trend.
