Grease Trap Waste Disposal Control

Legislative Control On Discharge of Grease Trap Waste

Discharge of wastewater from restaurants and food processing factories into any communal drains/sewers or waters of Hong Kong is subject to control under the Water Pollution Control Ordinance, Cap.358. A discharger shall first apply for and obtain a licence under the Water Pollution Control Ordinance before commencement of any discharge. For details of the licence application, please refer to the booklet "A Guide to the Water Pollution Control Ordinance".

Under the licence conditions, restaurants and food processing factories should properly maintain their grease traps and ensure proper disposal of the grease trap waste. They should also keep proper cleaning records of grease traps for inspection by the officers of EPD.

Any person who discharges grease trap waste into communal drains/sewers or waters of Hong Kong commits an offence under the Water Pollution Control Ordinance and is liable to a maximum fine of $200,000 and imprisonment of 6 months upon first conviction.
