It is important for the Environmental Protection Department (EPD) to set an example to both the private and public sector and to demonstrate the benefits and improvements associated with the implementation of the ISO 14001 Environmental Management System (EMS). Therefore, our Waste Facilities Business Unit (WFBU) has taken the first step by obtaining the ISO14001 certification in September 2000.

The mission of the WFBU is to develop and promote a sustainable waste management strategy, and to plan and provide waste management facilities for Hong Kong. By developing the EMS, we can further systematize the existing environmental activities of the Unit and enhance our environmental performance.

We are also committed to continual improvement in setting environmental targets and developing new plans, by implementing new waste reduction measures, conserving resources consumption and planning appropriate waste facilities to cater for our future demands.

To further enhance the benefits in achieving this EMS, we have shared with our suppliers and contractors our commitment and goals set down in our Environmental Policy. We have also developed initiatives requiring contractors of new waste management facilities to obtain ISO 14001 EMS certification as part of the contract requirement.
