Environmental Management - Drivers to Obtaining IS014001

At Gammon we strive to be an “environmentally responsible” contractor. We fully appreciate the significant impact that construction activities can have on the environment, the community and global resources. We aim, through our construction projects, to enhance the build environment, for our clients and the community at large, both now and in the future.

We regard excellence as critical to our success. Environmental Protection is part and parcel of our every daily operation and Gammon seeks at all stages to minimize, and where possible eliminate, the environmental impacts arising from our operations. We strive for continual improvement and aim to lead the way in construction management, raising standards for the industry to follow. We began sustainability reporting in 2002.

Benefits of the Environmental Management System

Since becoming ISO14001 certified in 2001, we have seen many benefits as a direct result of the implementation of our Environmental Management System (EMS):

  •  Enhancement of Gammon’s Image

Being ISO14001 accredited enhances our image and demonstrates to our customers our proactive commitment to environment protection.

  •  Increased Environmental Awareness

The EMS has enabled Gammon to have effective, consistent and systematic approach to environmental protection across all our business operations. Environmental training has increased environmental awareness amongst staff, workers and sub-contractors. As a result we have seen a reduction in prosecutions for breaches of environmental legislation to zero prosecutions in 2006, and improvements in public community engagement.

  • Improved Efficiency

Through Gammon’s annual sustainability reporting and our internal environmental performance reporting gained a clearer appreciation of the amount of resources that we use. We have been able to use this information to reduced fuel and water consumption, minimise waste generation. Through engagement with registered recycling companies and supply chain collaborations we have increase the amount of waste recycled.
