Introduction

Leighton Contractors (Asia) Limited (LCAL) is a division of Leighton Asia Limited, one of Asia's leading construction contractors. Leighton Asia Limited is part of the Leighton Group, Australia's largest contracting and project development group.

The company was established in Hong Kong in 1975. From a strong civil engineering base, LCAL's workload has expanded to include commercial building, housing, marine works and mechanical and foundation engineering for both the private and public sectors.

The company obtained ISO 14001 certification in June 1999.

Reasons for Implementing ISO 14001

Leighton has long recognised that the activities of the construction industry have the potential to have a significant effect on the environment. A number of years ago, in an effort to minimise the environmental impact of the company's operations, an environmental policy was developed and adopted. Today, environmental management is firmly integrated within our management and reporting systems.

The environment is an increasingly important issue to our clients, governments, regulatory authorities and most importantly, the communities in which we work. By implementing an environmental management system compliant with ISO 14001, we are required to maintain and continually improve our high standards of environmental management.

Benefits of ISO 14001 Certification

ISO 14001 certification has a number of social and economic benefits.

Certification to international standards by an independent third party gives greater credibility to our environmental management system. It enhances our image and demonstrates to clients that we are proactive in caring for the environment.

ISO 14001 certification highlights to the communities in which we work that Leighton is a good corporate citizen who is concerned about the potential impacts its work could have on the environment, and takes action to ensure that these are managed.

It can also facilitate the attainment of the various permits and authorizations we require to undertake work.

Certification encourages us to consultantly look to improve our operating methods, which in turn leads to greater efficiency, reduced wastage and cost savings. By improving our operating methods, we also reduce the likelihood of incidents that damage the environment and can result in liability.
