Persistent Organic Pollutants

FAQs

1. What are POPs?

POPs (Persistent Organic Pollutants) are a group of toxic chemicals widely used as pesticides and/or industrial chemicals. These chemicals share four common properties: (a) they are highly toxic; (b) they are persistent, lasting for years or even decades in the environment before degrading into less toxic forms; (c) they travel long distances through the air and/or water; and (d) they accumulate in the fatty tissues of people and the wildlife.
