Persistent Organic Pollutants

3. What is the Stockholm Convention on POPs?

The Stockholm Convention on POPs is a global treaty to protect human health and the environment from the potentially harmful effects of POPs. Parties to the Convention will take measures to control/restrict the trade, domestic production and use of intentionally produced POPs, and to reduce, and where possible to ultimately eliminate, the production and release of  unintentionally produced POPs by-products. There are 22 POPs currently identified by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).
