11. What are PCBs?

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are mixtures of up to 209 individual chlorinated compounds (known as congeners). PCBs have been manufactured for over 50 years as industrial chemicals widely used as heat exchange/insulating fluids in electric transformers and capacitors and other electrical equipment, and as additives in paint, carbonless copy paper, sealants and plastics.
