Livestock Waste Information System

Examples of wastewater treatment facilities adopted by local livestock farmers

Most local pig farms practice wet muck out for the handling of livestock waste. For chicken farms, they tend to adopt septic tank and soak-away system to handle the residual liquid waste.

For farms practicing wet muck out, on-site treatment of the liquid waste is required before discharge. The quality of the effluent and hence the extent of pollution impacts would depend on the house-keeping practice, the efficiency of solid/liquid separation and the effectiveness of wastewater treatment. For farms using dry muck out method to handle livestock waste, there would still be wastewater discharge arising from farm cleansing and septic tank/soakaway overflow and by-pass.
