Letter to the Editor of the South China Morning Post published on 24 April, 2002 - Obsolete Laptop
I would like to respond to the letter from Mr Mark Deamer of Yau Ma Tei, that was published on 16 April 2002.
Old computers that are still functional and have a certain second-hand market value are collected by traders and recyclers for use either locally or overseas. But if the computers are totally obsolete and have no second-hand value, they are often collected for recovery of useable parts before selling as scrap. There are also charity organisations and green groups who run small scale recovery schemes to donate old computers to those in need of them. The Environmental Protection Department has compiled a list of traders and organisations who collect old computers. The list is availble in our web site (www.info.gov.hk/epd/english/environmentinhk/waste/prob_solutions/wrfp_outlets.html).
Mr Deamer may also call our recycling helpline (2755 2750) if he needs more specific advice on possible outlets for his obsolete laptop.
