Letter to the Editor of the South China Morning Post published on 23 May, 2002
I refer to the letter headlined "Noise nuisance" (SCMP, 17 May 2002) regarding the intermittent noise generated by speeding motorists at Smithfield Extension in the middle of the night. Your reader asked this department to take up the case and take whatever action is necessary to eliminate the noise nuisance.
The key concern of your reader is about noise from speeding or illegal road racing at night. Such type of noise is controlled under the Road Traffic Ordinance and is being tackled by the Police through their enforcement actions. We have liaised with the Police and are given to understand that they have conducted enforcement actions against speeding at Smithfield Extension in recent months and will continue their enforcement effort in this regard. If your readers have further queries or information regarding speeding in that area, they can contact Western District Police Station at 2859 4200.
