Objectives

The Pearl River Delta (PRD) region has been the economic powerhouse in China. In the past decade, foreign enterprises have invested over US$ 450 billion in China, of which over 30% went to the PRD. Hong Kong and Macau, in close proximity to the PRD and a gateway to the West and overseas, have an important role to play in the economic development in PRD.

Following China's accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO), the development of the PRD region is expected to take on new dimensions. Local authorities are forging ahead with many mega-infrastructure projects and are granting more latitude to foreign investors with a view to attracting even more capital. Nevertheless, the escalating economic activities within the PRD inevitably bring about a wide range of economic, social, and environmental sustainability issues, which have been arousing increasing interest from all walks of the society.

A prerequisite to accomplish sustainable development within the PRD region lies in the successful adoption of a mutually beneficial partnership approach to tackle problems. The formulation of such approaches and solutions is an important topic for debate and discussion. The Symposium aims to provide a forum for the exchange of expertise and experience in various sustainability issues as well as to foster a closer collaboration among professionals for promoting sustainable development in the PRD. The Symposium will address the following four areas of concern:

  1. Sustainable strategic planning and development;
  2. Transboundary pollution and related issues;
  3. Sustainable water resources development; and
  4. Sustainable waste management.
