Proposed sewerage works in Yuen Long gazetted

A plan to build a public sewerage system at the unsewered areas in Yuen Long South to improve the water quality of the Yuen Long Nullah was published in the Government Gazette today (May 26).

The new sewerage system will effectively reduce the quantity of untreated sewage discharged from new development areas in Areas 13 and 14 located to the south of Yuen Long town into the Yuen Long Nullah and improve the sanitary conditions of these areas, a spokesman for the Environmental Protection Department said.

"The proposed project will collect sewage generated from an estimated population of about 63 300 for treatment and disposal at the existing San Wai Sewage Treatment Works.

"The sewerage works, which will take 31 months to complete, are scheduled to start in May 2002," the spokesman noted.

Details of the proposal, in both English and Chinese, will also be put up at prominent positions in the works area.
