2018 Beach Water Quality Report published today (8 April 2019)

The water quality of all 41 gazetted beaches in Hong Kong has achieved the required standard for bathing waters for nine consecutive years since 2010. As reported in the 2018 Beach Water Quality Report, this achievement is brought about through years of efforts to implement pollution abatement measures.  The report can be viewed at the EPD website.

2017 Reports on Marine and River Water Quality in Hong Kong Published

Waste Disposal (Charging for Municipal Solid Waste) (Amendment) Bill 2018

The Waste Disposal (Charging for Municipal Solid Waste) (Amendment) Bill 2018 has been introduced into the Legislative Council on November 14.  The Bill proposes to implement municipal solid waste charging based on the "polluter-pays" principle.   Details can be referred to the press release and the MSW charging website.

Implementation of the WPRS

EPD issued a press release on 27 July to further remind members of the public and the trade that the Producer Responsibility Scheme on Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WPRS) will be implemented on 1 August 2018.  Please click here for the full text of the press release.  A set of frequently asked questions and answers has been set out in the Annex.

 

Regional Air Quality Monitoring results for 2017

The Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Pearl River Delta Regional Air Quality Monitoring Network  released a report on the 2017 monitoring results on 20 June 2018.

EPD to control short-chain chlorinated paraffins and tributyltin compounds starting from 1 July 2018

To strengthen protection of the general public and the environment against the potential health and pollution problems due to exposure to short-chain chlorinated paraffins and tributyltin compounds, these two chemicals have been listed in Schedule 2 to the Hazardous Chemicals Control Ordinance (Cap. 595) and will take effect from 1 July 2018.  Please refer to EPD's relevant webpage* for details of these newly listed hazardous chemicals.  The permits for the manufacture, export, import and use of short-chain chlorinated paraffins and tributyltin compounds can now be applied.

Hong Kong’s Climate Action Plan 2030+

The Environment Bureau launched Hong Kong’s Climate Action Plan 2030+ on January 20, 2017, which outlines the longer-term action in combating climate change. It also sets out Hong Kong’s carbon emission reduction target for 2030.  For details of the Action Plan, please click here.
