Beach Water Quality Report 2003
|
Overall, beach water quality in 2003 across the different districts of Hong Kong was similar to last year. Last year, eight beaches, or 20% of all gazetted beaches, did not meet WQO standards: in 2003, this figure went down to seven (17%), with Ma Wan Tung Wan improving its ranking to Fair. These kinds of percentages have remained relatively stable over the past few years. Prior to 1998, many more beaches failed to meet the WQO standard, so the current levels represent a significant improvement over the state of Hong Kong's water in the 1990s. Until some of the Government's major sewerage and drainage schemes are completed, however, it seems unlikely that Hong Kong will be able to see its beaches meet WQO standards 100 per cent. |

| In the meantime, the EPD is continuing its regular and unceasing work of monitoring beach water quality and making sure the public is consistently updated with the latest information. It is committed to providing accurate, comprehensive information on beach water quality to all who need it, and delivering this information using the fastest and most efficient methods possible. This task forms part of the EPD's mission to "safeguard the health and welfare of the community", and is one which the EPD is proud to be performing on behalf of all the citizens of and visitors to Hong Kong who use its splendid beaches. | ||
