Construction of Nina Tower at Tsuen Wan

The project was to construct a building complex of commercial, office and hotel development consisting of two tall towers sitting above a 10-storey podium; with two levels of basement for the provision of car parks, store rooms and mechanical rooms.

Environmental Concern

The construction works was adjacent to a number of air sensitive receivers, such as the Tsuen Wan Park, Skyline Plaza residential premises and the Yeung Uk Market. The dust emission during the construction of the superstructure and the operation of a concrete batching plant inside the site was the major concern. In addition, ground water generated from the excavation works has high soil and sand contents and would pollute the Rambler's Channel if discharged without any treatment.

Measures Adopted

Hoarding - Hoarding was provided along the entire site boundary, abutting Yeung Uk Rd., Tai Ho Rd. and Tsuen Wan Park.

Treatment - The bodies and wheels of vehicles leaving the construction site were thoroughly washed prior to exit by an automatic vehicle-washing facility. In addition, the site entrance and the main haul road were paved with concrete materials.

Dust Screen - Skip hoists for material transport were totally enclosed by impervious sheeting. Dust screens, in the form of netting, were also provided to enclose the whole scaffolding.

Treatment - The muddy ground waste was first collected at the two far end locations from the large basement area and then treated by 2 sedimentation tanks before discharging to storm drains.

Observations & Achievements

With effective dust and wastewater control measures implemented, the nearby residents and the downstream drainage system / receiving waterbody were properly protected.
