A Train Station Amidst Residential Towers at Po Lam, Tseung Kwan O

The Po Lam Station of the Tseung Kwan O MTR Extension is in the centre of the residential development - Metrocity, in Tseung Kwan O New Town. The station construction coincided with the gradual occupancy of the residential towers.

Environmental Concern

Residential towers surrounded this site on all sides during the station construction. There were potential noise and dust impacts upon 6,800 households. Mud and stains carried by vehicles could affect adjacent road surfaces, obstruct drains and would bring muddy water into the sea.

Measures Adopted

Dust Cover - Dust enclosure for walkway construction.

Treatment - Wheel-washing facilities for removing dirt and mud on off-site vehicles.

Stringent control of off-site vehicles (wheel-wash) and treatment of muddy water

Observations & Achievements

The measures adopted had effectively mitigated the environmental impacts. This became a successful project despite seemingly demanding conditions. Po Lam even became the first MTR Station in the Tseung Kwan O Extension to reach topping up, being ahead of the construction schedule. The Contractor also won an Environmental Award from MTR Corporation.
