Letter to the Editor of SCMP - Response to letter headlined "Wrong day for crucial meeting on air quality"

I refer to Ms Claire Garner’s article “Wrong day for crucial meeting on air quality” of 27 January 2008.

We are pleased to note that some of your readers take our air quality seriously and regard the forthcoming consultation forum as a crucial meeting on their agenda. Indeed, we take all views from the community seriously and would like to hear from them on how best the current Air Quality Objectives should be reviewed and how a long-term air quality management plan should be developed.

In choosing the time and day of the forum, we took into account the availability of the speakers, audience and suitable venue. We fully understand that any day we choose will not be able to suit everyone's schedule. Nevertheless, the forum held on 31 January 2008 had attracted some 200 participants. It seems that the choice is largely acceptable though it may not be convenient for some. For those who could not attend the forum in person, we would be most grateful if they would kindly let us have their views and comments by e-mails at our website at http://www.epd.gov.hk/epd/english/environmentinhk/air/air_quality_objectives/air_quality_objectives.html.

Yours sincerely,

Benny Y.K. Wong
Assistant Director (Air Policy)
