EPD Made a Show in Eco Expo Asia 2007

Eco Expo Asia is an international trade fair on environmental protection and the only event of this kind in Hong Kong.  This significant event was held on 27 - 30 October 2007 at the Asia World Expo with EPD’s participation for the second year.

The Expo comprised 135 exhibitors coming from 18 countries.  Over 5,000 visitors were attracted to this four-day event.  The Expo was divided into three areas: Green World, Green Enterprise and Green Living, in which environmental systems and technologies, environmentally products for business operations, as well as eco-friendly consumer products and services were shown.

The Expo was officially opened on 27 October 2007.  The Hon. Audrey Eu Yuet-mee, SC, JP, Chairman of the Panel on Environmental Affairs, Legislative Council, was the officiating guest of the opening ceremony.  Mr. Edward Yau, JP, Secretary for the Environment, also visited the Expo and officiated the Networking Luncheon jointly organized by the Federation of Hong Kong Industries and the organizers of the Expo.

The Environment Bureau (ENB) and the Environmental Protection Department (EPD) participated in the Expo with exhibition covering a wide range of topics, showing to the business trade and the public the current work and future plans under EPD and ENB’s various initiatives which contribute to developing a sustainable environment in Hong Kong and the Pearl River Delta region.  Cleaner production was a key theme of the ENB/EPD exhibition booths.  It showcased the encouraging results of the Cleaner Production Technical Support Pilot Project commissioned by EPD and conducted by the Hong Kong Productivity Council.  Factories participating in the Pilot Project shared their experiences in reducing pollutant emissions while achieving cost savings at the same time.  In addition, the ENB/EPD exhibition booths also provided visitors with useful information on the Indoor Air Quality Certification Scheme, the development of EcoPark, the assistance offered by the Compliance Assistance Centre, the initiatives of the Sustainable Development Council and the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department’s Energy Efficiency Labelling Scheme.

An Eco Asia Conference and various forums were also held during the event.  Topics included air quality, water and waste management, waste recycling, cross-boundary environmental cooperation between Hong Kong and Guangdong, alternative energy and energy efficiency as well as green living style.  Colleagues of EPD and EMSD made various presentations during the Conference and forums.

Apart from being a platform for disseminating and exchanging the latest environmental information among those engaged in the trade and industry, the event was also open to the public for one day.  The event, therefore, did not only provide a valuable chance for EPD to have direct dialogues with the environmental technology supply and service sectors, but also served as an interface for EPD colleagues to listen to and exchange views with the public.
