Essay Writing and Programme Plan on "Caring for Our Water Resources"

 

Environmental Competition for Youths of Hong Kong on Objectives:

The purposes of this competition are to enhance students' knowledge and awareness on the protection of our water resources so that they can understand the issue better and will observe the relevant regulations, ensuring that untreated or inadequately treated waste water will not be discharged into streams, rivers, beaches and marine water and at the same time act to conserve our water resources.

Groups:

Two groups-Primary School Group and Secondary School Group

Formats and Rules:

Primary School Group

Students are invited to submit essays on the theme "Caring for Our Water Resources" in not more than 600 words in Chinese or English. The contents of the essays may be about views on water shortage and water pollution, the importance of protecting our water resources, and actions and legislations to be taken and enforced for the protection of our water resources. Each proposal can be submitted in a group of not more than four students.  Students should write down their names, classes, names of school, names of teacher-in-charge and contact numbers on their submissions.  No submission will be returned. Based on the judging criteria, essays will be assessed by the adjudication panel to select prize winners.

Secondary School Group

Students are invited to submit proposals on "How to educate the public and promote awareness on Caring for Our Water Resources". The proposals may be written in either Chinese or English, and should not be more than 10 pages (A4-size paper).  Each proposal can be submitted in a group of not more than four students.  Students should write down their names, classes, names of school, names of teacher-in-charge and contact numbers on their submissions.  No submission will be returned.  Based on the judging criteria, proposals will be assessed by the adjudication panel to select proposals to Final Competition.  Winners to the Final Competition will be invited to present their proposals to the adjudication panel at an open session to be held on 19 August 2004 to compete for the prizes.

Prizes:  

Primary School Group:   Champion-$500 Book Coupons, First Runner-up-$400 Book Coupons, Second Runner-up-$200 Book Coupons, 7 Merit-$100 Book Coupons

Secondary School Group: Champion-$800 Book Coupons, First Runner-up-$500 Book Coupons, Second Runner-up-$300 Book Coupons, 7 Merit-$200 Book Coupons

Winners will also be awarded certificates issued by the Environmental Protection Department and have the opportunities to meet with the students from the Mainland.  Wining proposals will be loaded on EPD website.

 

Judging Criteria:

Primary School Group:Content (60%), Wording (20%), Structure (20%)

 

Secondary School Group:Content,Wording and Structure(60%),

Impact on the Public (25%), Creativity (15%)

Deadline:

 

All submissions should be sent to Room 4522, 45/F., Revenue Tower, 5 Gloucester Road, Wanchai, Hong Kong (Attn: Ms YUNG Wing-wah) on or before 30 June 2004 for Primary School Group and on or before 10 July 2004 for Secondary School Group.

TRAINING PROGRAMMES

To echo the theme of the ompetition, EPD will arrange a series of free training programmes on the theme "Caring for Our Water Resources" for teachers and students of Primary and Secondary Schools with supports from World Wide Fund for Nature Hong Kong and The Conservancy Association. The programmes will be held from May to October 2004. These programmes include workshops, seminars and site visits. The objective of the training programmes is to enhance the knowledge and awareness of teachers and students on the protection of water resources, so that they may disseminate the message in their schools and communities.
