Low-level radioactive waste storage facility to be built

The Environmental Protection Department (EPD) is inviting companies with the relevant experience and expertise to bid for a tender for a low-level radioactive waste (LLRW) storage facility at Siu A Chau, an offshore island which is not inhabited.

Under the contract, the successful tenderer will have to design, build and operate the facility to meet the most stringent environmental and safety standards, a spokesman for the EPD said.

Details were published in the Government Gazette today (May 31), he added.

"The facility will have a storage capacity of 70 cubic metres of LLRW arising mainly from hospitals and research establishments. As the annual arising is only about 0.3 cubic metres, this storage facility will be able to meet Hong Kong's long-term need.

"The design and construction are expected to commence in 2003 for completion in 2004.

"The successful tenderer will operate the facility for 10 years," the spokesman noted.

Interested companies should submit their tenders by 12 noon on Friday, August 30, 2002.

End/Friday, May 31, 2002
