EPD organises mooncake container recovery programme

With the Mid-Autumn Festival approaching, the Environmental Protection Department (EPD) will launch a programme to encourage the public to recover mooncake containers.

The Principal Environmental Protection Officer (Compliance Assistance), Ms Betty Cheung, said the programme aimed to enhance green awareness and encourage the public to take part in waste recovery.

"It is the second year for the EPD to organise such a programme under the department's ongoing partnership programme with the restaurant trade," she noted.

About 25 000 mooncake containers, most of them were tin, were recovered during last year's recovery programme.

This year's programme is co-organised by the Hong Kong Federation of Restaurants and Related Trades, the Association of Restaurant Managers, and the Hong Kong Association of Property Management Companies.

"Booths will be set up at 12 popular shopping centres in Hong Kong, Kowloon and the New Territories and 27 Towngas outlets for collection of mooncake containers," Ms Cheung said.

"Both paper and tin containers are acceptable as long as they are clean," she added.

Members of the public can take their mooncake containers to the booths from noon to 7 pm on September 25, 26, 29 and 30, and October 1, 2, 3, 9 and 10.

"As an incentive, a set of coupons will be given to those who hand in a mooncake container at the booths.

"The coupons can be used at some 130 designated restaurants and food outlets, two cake shop chains and Towngas outlets.

"Various concessions including discounts, free dishes, desserts, cakes, etc would be offered by them upon the presentation of a coupon during consumption," Ms Cheung noted.

An opening ceremony of the recovery programme will be held at 2.30 pm on September 25 at Cityplaza in Tai Koo Shing.

Details of the programme and the concessions offered can be found on the EPD website at www.epd.gov.hk and the Green Restaurant Website at www.greenrestaurant-hk.org. For enquiries, please call the department's Customer Service Centre at 3187 0322.

Apart from this recovery programme, the EPD also encourages and assists private housing estates to organise mooncake container recovery activities.

So far, about 200 private housing estates have signed up to hold such activities for the upcoming Mid-Autumn Festival.
