Delegation headed by GDEPB Director-General visits Hong Kong

Upon an invitation from the Environment, Transport and Works Bureau, Mr Li Qing, Director-General of the Environmental Protection Bureau of Guangdong Province (GDEPB), led a delegation to Hong Kong today (July 18) for a two-day visit. The delegation met with the Secretary for the Environment, Transport and Works, Dr Sarah Liao, this afternoon.

The delegation consists of representatives from the relevant Government authorities in Guangdong Province and environmental protection authorities of cities in the Pearl River Delta (PRD) Region.

During the meeting, both sides expressed satisfaction with the implementation of the PRD Regional Air Quality Monitoring Network.

Upon completion of the evaluation of technical competence and acceptance of the network, Mr Li said that they aimed to release air quality monitoring results of the PRD region regularly within the year.

"Residents in the region can gain access to the latest information on regional air quality," he added.

The network is set up in accordance with the PRD Regional Air Quality Management Plan agreed in 2003. It comprises 16 monitoring stations, 13 of which are modified from suitable existing stations to cater for the requirements of the network. These stations are located at Shenzhen, Dongguan, Guangzhou, Foshan, Zhaoqing, Jiangmen, Zhongshan, Zhuhai and Huizhou as well as Tap Mun, Tsuen Wan and Tung Chung of Hong Kong. Three new monitoring stations are set up at Conghua, Panyu and Huizhou, based on the conditions of the regional environment.

Also during the meeting, officials from both sides exchanged experience in vehicle emission control measures.

Dr Liao noted that the HKSARG had spent much effort in combating vehicle emissions over the years.

"We will continue to exchange experience with our Mainland counterparts, in particular our neighbouring areas, on this front. Both sides will co-operate in the preparations for the adoption of more stringent vehicle emission and fuel standards in the PRD region," she said.

"Besides, both sides will engage in further exchanges in vehicle emission testing and the use of alternative vehicle fuel," she said.

During their stay in the territory, the delegation will visit a liquefied petroleum gas filling station and a vehicle examination centre.
