23 pollution convictions in December

Twenty-three convictions were recorded last month (December 2006) for breaches of anti-pollution legislation enforced by the Environmental Protection Department.

The heaviest fine in December was $30,000, assessed against a person who discharged substandard liquid livestock waste.

A person exporting controlled waste without a permit and failing to engage service of a waste collector received a concurrent sentence of six months' imprisonment, suspended for two years, for each offence.

An effective sentence of 200 hours of community service was handed down against a person who exported controlled waste without a permit and failed to engage the service of a waste collector.
