Government to promote dress down at work

Business personages and senior government officials today (June 3) get together at TVB City and parade along the catwalk in causal business attires to encourage people to dress down at work to save energy in the age of global warming.

The Chief Executive launched the "Action Blue Sky Campaign" in July last year to urge our community to participate in combating air pollution, including appealing for "dress down" in workplace during the summer while keeping the air-conditioned room temperature at 25.5 degrees Celsius.

To keep up the momentum, the "Cool Biz Fashion Show" was organised tonight to further encourage more corporations and institutions to adopt a "dress down" policy in summer. The Fashion Show was organised by the Environmental Protection Department, together with the Environmental Campaign Committee, to tie in with the global theme of the World Environment Day (WED) 2007 on climate change and to address local concerns over air pollution.

As laid down in the agenda of WED 2007, communities are pivotal to changing attitudes towards environmental issues. "People have become more aware of the need for energy saving and have been paying much attention in putting it into practice," said an EPD spokesman.

The launching ceremony was officiated by the Chief Executive, Mr Donald Tsang; the Secretary for the Environment, Transport and Works, Dr Sarah Liao; the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the HKSAR, Mr Lu Xinhua; the Secretary for Health, Wealth and Food, Dr York Chow; the Permanent Secretary for the Civil Service, Mr Andrew Wong; and the Chairman of the Environmental Campaign Committee, Mr Joseph Lee Chung-tak.

Taking the stage in their cool business outfits are Dr Liao; Dr Chow; Mr Wong; Mr Lee; Chairperson of the HK General Chamber of Commerce, Dr Lily Chiang; Chief Executive Officer of the Business Environment Council, Dr Andrew Thomson; Mr Cliff Sun, Deputy Chairman of the Federation of Hong Kong Industries; Mr Manohar Chugh, General Committee Member of the HK General Chamber of Commerce; Mr Julian Ludbrook, Consul-General of New Zealand in Hong Kong; Ms Ulpu Koskinen, Consul of Finland in Hong Kong and Mr Lal Duhthlana Ralte, Consul-General of India in Hong Kong.

The spokesman said that the idea of "Cool Biz" had also been promoted in other countries including Japan, South Korea and the United Kingdom in recent years.

"The Government will continue to encourage our business sector to promote a more flexible dress code and to refrain from overcooling offices. Meanwhile, more public education will be done to integrate energy saving concept in our daily living," he added.

The show will be air on TVB Jade on Saturday (June 9) at 9.30pm.

Ends/Sunday, June 3, 2007
