Conditions of the watercourses upstream and downstream of major livestock (pig and poultry) farms in the North and Yuen Long Districts
With the enactment of the Waste Disposal (Livestock Waste) Regulations in 1988, under the Waste Disposal Ordinance, all the livestock farms are equipped with facilities for treatment and disposal of livestock waste / wastewater. Since then, there was a 97% percent reduction in pollution load entering the rivers.
While a good use of the facilities can enable the livestock waste and wastewater be treated properly to meet the statutory standards, an alternative possible use of the facilities as a storage device also facilitate the farm owner/operator to make a discharge at his/her convenience. Due to the irresponsibility of a few livestock farm owners / operators, conditions of some watercourses downstream of livestock farms in the North and Yuen Long Districts are still far from acceptable.
